Embracing the Courage of New Beginnings: A World Refugee Day Reflection

Each year on June 20th, we pause to observe World Refugee Day — a moment to honor the strength, resilience, and hopes of the millions of people around the world who have been forced to flee their home countries due to war, persecution, or violence. But for those of us here in Erie, Pennsylvania — and especially for those of us at MCRC — this day is far more than symbolic. It’s deeply personal.

Since joining the Multicultural Community Resource Center (MCRC), I’ve had the profound honor of walking alongside refugee families as they begin their new lives in America. I’ve stood at the airport as mothers and fathers clutched their children tightly, stepping into an unfamiliar land with nothing but faith and determination. I’ve helped prepare their first homes, often with our incredible staff working late into the night to ensure that everything feels warm, welcoming, and dignified. And in those moments — watching someone unlock a front door that opens not only to a house but to a future — I’ve been humbled in ways I never imagined.

Refugees have shaped me. Their courage, their generosity, and their determination to rebuild after unimaginable loss have left an indelible mark on my heart. Their stories remind me that freedom is never something to be taken for granted — and that the opportunity to begin again is a sacred one.

Here in Erie, we are home to more than 13,000 New Americans, many of whom arrived as refugees from countries like Syria, Ukraine, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and Burma. They bring with them rich cultures, diverse languages, and skilled talents — but more importantly, they bring the desire to give back to the country that offered them a second chance. Refugees in Erie are opening businesses, filling critical roles in healthcare and manufacturing, and strengthening our local economy. They are our neighbors, our coworkers, our classmates, and our friends.

The journey of a refugee is never easy. It is paved with pain, loss, and the daunting task of rebuilding. But it is also a journey of hope, of resilience, and of belief in a better tomorrow. That’s what we celebrate on World Refugee Day — not just the trials they’ve endured, but the incredible contributions they continue to make to our communities.

At a time when immigration rhetoric can so easily be distorted by fear or misinformation, let us lead with compassion and truth. Let us remember that welcoming refugees is not only the right thing to do — it’s what makes us stronger as a nation. It’s what renews our identity as a country that offers liberty and justice for all.

So today, and every day, I celebrate the incredible families we serve at MCRC. I celebrate their bravery, their dreams, and the profound impact they have made — on me, on Erie, and on our shared future.

Happy World Refugee Day. May we continue to open our hearts, our communities, and our country to those seeking peace and a place to call home.
